A man from North Carolina fighting stage 4 cancer, but a lucky stop at a gas station led to some good fortune claiming a $ 250,000 prize jackpot from a scratch-off ticket. His further plans are for a dream trip with his wife.
Charlotte’s Richard Beare has won $ 250,000. Of which the amount he would take home would be $ 176,876 after state and federal taxes.
“This feels great,” Beare said. “It’s such a relief.”
“I recently got diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer,” he said in the North Carolina Education Lottery news. “I want to travel while I can still enjoy myself. My wife has always wanted to go to Italy since that’s where her descendants are from. Now I can take her.”
The retired auto mechanic stopped at a Quik Trip in Charlotte two weeks ago. He’s not a regular lottery player, it happened after his wife asked him to stop to get a Powerball ticket. But that’s not what made him wealthy. He decided to buy four Carolina Black lottery tickets for $ 5. From which the winner was the fourth.
“The fourth one was the winner,” he said. “When I saw that I had matching numbers, I asked (the clerk), ‘What does it mean if I match the numbers?’ She said it meant I won a prize. I told her, ‘Well, I guess we just won $250,000 then.’ She was in shock and just kept looking back and forth to me and the ticket.”
